“A DAY ON, NOT A DAY OFF!”

An annual event honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s legacy. Appropriate for all ages, participants complete service projects to benefit the surrounding community.

The Day of Service program is a joint signature event of the City of Highland Park, the City’s Human Relations Advisory Group and the Park District of Highland Park, bringing together Highland Park residents and neighbors throughout the North Shore for on-site service projects, engaging presentations, and special performances, to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Schedule of Events

  • 9-10:30am: Drive-through Donations (see below)
  • 10-10:20am: Presentation of the Colors by the Highland Park Police Department Color Guard, Pledge of Allegiance lead by Human Relations Advisory Group Student Liaisons, remarks by City of Highland Park Mayor Rotering and Park District of Highland Park Board Vice President Freeman, a keynote address by Highland Park High School sophomore and member of Black Student Union Dara Babalola.
  • 10:20am-12:30pm: Service Projects

Please note a change in date for this year as the City’s Day of Service program has been rescheduled for Monday, February 17, 2025 due to the conflict with Inauguration Day on Monday, January 20, 2025. This decision was made by the City after careful consideration of a recommendation made by the Human Relations Advisory Group, in an effort to ensure that this event to honor Dr. King’s legacy through service received the attention it so richly deserves.
